Standing on Riddiford Street in Newtown, Wellington, you see a quaint and welcoming building. This is St Thomas’ Chapel / St Thomas’ Anglican Church, a place of worship and community that has been a constant in the neighbourhood since 1898. St Thomas’ began as a small mission room next door to where McDonald’s now stands. Two years later, a larger hall was built, and in 1895, the original St Thomas’ Church was constructed. Over the years, through numerous re-builds, expansions, and even a fire in 1971, the church has served the people of Newtown. St Thomas’ stood tall through the changing times, providing solace, comfort, and support. Today, the chapel, along with newer parts of the building, hosts a variety of services and events, including family worship services, community breakfasts, and even a coffee and tea social hour before the service.
