In 1959, a new community named Woodview sprouted along Weston Road in Toronto. St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church emerged from this growth. Families needed a spiritual home. The story of St. Stephen’s is one of community spirit and determination. It began when Chalmer’s Presbyterian Church downtown considered relocating due to demographic shifts. They provided a crucial $35,000 loan. Land was purchased at Weston Road and Verobeach Boulevard. A temporary wooden portable arrived in 1962. Services began while plans for a permanent structure took shape. North York Township granted permission with a two-year deadline for the new building. Hanks, Irwin & Pearson Architects designed a modern edifice. During construction, the portable moved across the street, eventually finding its final home at the University Presbyterian Church on Finch Avenue West. Charles E. Oster, a key financial contributor, ceremoniously broke ground for St. Stephen’s in 1964. The cornerstone was laid that October by Carroll Contracting Company Limited. The elegant building was finished by the year’s end. St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church officially opened its doors on January 28, 1965, with Reverend J.R. Graham leading the inaugural service. Miss Gloria Robbins played the organ and Mrs. Mary Lessells directed the choir. Reverend Graham retired later that year. The church then welcomed Reverend Victor Turner, his wife Olive, and their sons Larry and Mark in 1966. Reverend Turner, originally from London, England, brought a rich background to St. Stephen’s. He served in the R.A.F., Royal Navy, and Fleet Air Arm. Olive, a talented soprano and pianist, led the choir. Their sons attended Emery Collegiate Institute and became skilled musicians. St. Stephen’s has a rich history of community outreach. It maintains a strong commitment to serving the homeless and those with low incomes. It continues to be a place where people can come to serve those in need.
