A building with a past. That’s St. Stephen’s Bible Church in Cape Town. It stands as a testament to transformation and resilience. Let’s step back in time. This site wasn’t always a place of worship.

In 1799, during British occupation, Governor Sir George Yonge started something different here. He authorized the building of a theater. It opened in 1800 on what was then Boeren Pleijn now Riebeeck Square. Locals called it the “komediehuis”. It was South Africa’s first theater. The theater included shops and workshops at street level. The theater itself was above.

But the theater wasn’t a success. It fell into disuse. Then in 1838, Dr. Adamson of the Presbyterian Church saw a new purpose. He wanted a school for freed slaves. The Dutch Reformed Church supported him. Soon, the building became a school during the week. On Sundays, it transformed into a place of worship.

The building was named after St. Stephen. He was the first Christian martyr. Some believe it received this name. Dissatisfied slaves stoned it during a service.

In 1857, the congregation joined the Dutch Reformed Church. The church purchased the building. St. Stephen’s is reputedly the only Dutch Reformed Church named after a saint.

The 20th century brought challenges. The area changed. The congregation shrunk. There was talk of demolition. A parking garage was proposed. Fortunately, the space was too small. The project was abandoned.

The Apartheid government threatened the church again. They wanted the suburb for white residents only. This proposal also failed. In 1965, St. Stephen’s was declared a National Monument.

St. Stephen’s Bible Church stands as a symbol. It represents faith, education, and community. It is a place where people gather to know God through Jesus. The Bible is central to their beliefs. Today, St. Stephen’s welcomes all. It offers services and programs for everyone. It is a beacon of hope in Cape Town.
