St. Rose of Lima’s College began its journey far from here. Its story started on February 23, 1948. The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary founded St. Rose of Lima’s School. Their goal was simple. They wanted to serve the Hong Kong community. It began as a government-subsidized school for girls. From the start, it emphasized strong moral values.
Originally, the school offered primary courses for six years. It also included two secondary classes. Over time, more secondary classes were added. Eventually, students began taking the HKCEE exams. The first Arts A-level class took their exams in 1986. The Science A-level class followed in 1991. The Students Union was inaugurated in 1992. Though a formal Parent-Teacher Association wasn’t established until 1997, a close connection with parents always existed.
To improve education and gain more space, the secondary school moved in September 1999. It relocated to a standard secondary building on 29 Ngan Shing Street in Shatin. After this move, the secondary school needed a new name. It couldn’t use the same name as the primary school anymore. After discussions with students, staff, and parents, they chose the name “college”. This distinguished the secondary school. The primary school then took over the entire building at 4 Embankment Road.
Today, St. Rose of Lima’s College continues to excel. It uses English as the primary language of instruction. The college is known as a Band 1B school. This signifies high academic standards.
The college embraces the motto “Exploring with Care, Transcending with Love.” This reflects a commitment to growth. The school wants to nurture an environment where every girl can flourish. This includes academic, emotional, and spiritual development.
In recent years, St. Rose of Lima’s College students have achieved remarkable awards. Vincy Tai, a graduate, won the Grantham Scholars of the Year Award. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding HKDSE results. Scarlet Cheung and Kelly Chan received the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Prizes. Kelly Chan was admitted to HKU to study Actuarial Science through a special scheme.
Students at St. Rose of Lima’s College excel in many areas. Meerab Malik won an award for “Best Improvement”. Elen Choi received recognition in “Visual Arts”. Edith Yip was recognized as a “Linguist – Cantonese”. Cheryl Ng was recognized in the Sha Tin District Outstanding Student Election.
The students also thrive in public speaking, design, and STEM. The Chinese Orchestra won the Silver Award in the Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows. The Debate Team secured a championship. In drama, the students won awards for performance, script, and stage effects.
