Gazing up at St. Pius, one might hear whispers of its resilience. St. Pius Church stands proudly in Cologne’s Zollstock district. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith, having weathered storms both literal and historical. St. Pius isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and glass.
St. Pius Church emerged from humble beginnings. A simple shed served as the initial place of worship at the corner of Zollstocksweg and Höninger Weg. Between 1913 and 1915, this modest structure gave way to the magnificent edifice we see today. Architect Eduard Endler blended late Gothic elements with Renaissance and Baroque influences. Cardinal Felix von Hartmann consecrated St. Pius on May 10, 1915. The church suffered damage during World War II. It was meticulously rebuilt under the guidance of Cologne architect Karl Band. Its towering steeple, completed in 1956, now dominates the Zollstock skyline. It stands as one of the tallest in Cologne.
Inside St. Pius, vibrant artistry awaits. Wilhelm Buschulte’s “Gate to the Future” adorns the choir’s front wall. His colorful windows illuminate the nave. Hans Lünenborg crafted the choir windows, while Will Thonett designed the krypta’s ethereal glow. A wooden cross, sculpted by Düsseldorf artist Herbert Belau, graces the choir. The altar, tabernacle stele, and Easter candlestick are the creations of Karl Matthäus Winter. St. Pius also boasts one of Cologne’s largest sets of bells, its seven voices filling the air with rich tones. The Seifert & Sohn organ, with its intricate design overseen by Cologne organ professor Josef Zimmermann, enhances the church’s musicality. A 2011 enhancement by TastenReich Orgelbau added a trumpet en chamade.
St. Pius has also played a role in the lives of prominent figures. Joseph Frings, later to become a Cardinal, served as chaplain at St. Pius. Peter Haanen also served as pastor. St. Pius Church remains a vibrant center of community life. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of hope and resilience, a beacon of faith that continues to inspire.
