A shiver of anticipation runs through you. You stand before St Philip’s Anglican Church. Its imposing presence speaks of centuries past.
St Philip’s is more than just a church. It is the oldest Anglican parish in Australia. Its story is deeply intertwined with the history of Sydney itself. From humble beginnings to its current magnificent structure it has witnessed the city’s growth.
The first church here wasn’t nearly as grand. Built by convict labor in 1793 it was a simple wattle and daub structure. Sadly it burned down in 1798. A replacement stone church followed. It stood in Lang Park a short distance from the current building. It was described as the ugliest church in Christendom. Its round clock tower rose 150 feet high.
The name St Philip’s honors Captain Arthur Phillip the colony’s first governor. Initially the spelling was inconsistent. But by 1848 when the current building began construction St Philip’s was the settled spelling.
Edmund Blacket a prominent architect designed the present church. Its Victorian Gothic style with English Perpendicular detail is breathtaking. The church tower mirrors Magdalen Tower in Oxford. The bells themselves were cast in London. They arrived in 1858.
During World War II the church hall served a unique purpose. It became a hostel for women officers on leave in Sydney. This was a partnership with the Church of England National Emergency Fund.
St Philip’s merged with Holy Trinity Garrison Church in 2013. They now form a joint parish. Both buildings contribute to their combined ministry. The church boasts a rich history of prominent clergy. Names like William Cowper and his son William Cowper are among the many who served here.
So here you stand before St Philip’s. Its stones whisper tales of convicts chaplains and governors. Its bells toll a legacy that continues to resonate. The church stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Sydney. Its story is a thread in the rich tapestry of this remarkable city. It is a story that deserves to be told. And it is a story that you should explore further.
