“A child’s worn leather boot, scuffed at the toe, filled with sweets and a small wooden toy.” That image, my friends, perfectly captures the spirit of St. Nikolaus Day here in Germany, a tradition deeply intertwined with the tales of St. Nikolaus himself. Now, some might mistake him for the jolly, red-suited fellow who visits on Christmas Eve, but St. Nikolaus is a figure all his own. He’s the patron saint of children, celebrated on December 6th, especially here in Germany. The story of St. Nikolaus takes us back to Myra, in present-day Turkey, where he served as a bishop in the 4th century. Legend has it, he inherited a fortune but, instead of keeping it, he gave it all away to those in need, especially children. This generosity earned him sainthood and sparked a cherished tradition. On the eve of his feast day, December 5th, children carefully clean their shoes, sometimes even their winter boots, leaving them outside their bedroom doors or by the front door. They hope that St. Nikolaus will visit during the night and fill their shoes with small gifts and treats. Imagine waking up to find your shoes filled with candy, gold coins, a chocolate Santa, maybe a small book, a DVD, or even a new pair of warm socks! Nothing too expensive, mind you, just small tokens of kindness, echoing the generosity of the saint himself. But there’s more to the story than just treats. St. Nikolaus traveled with a companion, Knecht Ruprecht, who carried a Rute, or switch. Children were questioned about their behavior and sometimes asked to recite a poem or sing a song. Good children, of course, received gifts. Those who misbehaved? Well, let’s just say Knecht Ruprecht’s switch served as a reminder to be good throughout the year. Even today, children sometimes tidy their rooms in preparation for St. Nikolaus’ visit. Some even leave hay or straw outside for his donkey. So, as you wander through Germany, remember the story of St. Nikolaus, a tale of kindness, generosity, and the magic of believing.
