“To love and to serve” This motto of St Mother Teresa Catholic Academy echoes through the hallways. It’s a powerful statement. It speaks to the heart of this school’s mission. It’s a mission deeply rooted in the legacy of its namesake. Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

St Mother Teresa Catholic Academy stands proudly in Toronto’s Malvern neighbourhood. It’s a vibrant hub of learning and community. It serves a diverse population reflecting the rich tapestry of Malvern. The school opened its doors in September 1985. Its initial location was rather unconventional. The first students experienced what they fondly called the “Tin Can” years. The school was housed in temporary portables. This humble beginning stands in stark contrast to the impressive building that now stands before you.

The school’s journey has been remarkable. From its humble start with 150 grade 9 students and a handful of teachers. It has blossomed into a thriving high school. It now boasts approximately 450 students. The original name was almost different. It was nearly called Mary Ward. However a student’s suggestion changed that. The student proposed Mother Teresa instead. The idea was quickly embraced. It perfectly captured the school’s ethos and values.

In 2003 the school’s name changed again. It became Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School. Finally in 2016 it adopted its current name. St Mother Teresa Catholic Academy became official. The school’s colours are a tribute to Mother Teresa. The royal blue and gold accents reflect her habits. The school’s athletic teams are known as the Titans. The name was chosen by a student body contest.

St Mother Teresa Catholic Academy is more than just a school. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of community and service. Its diverse student body embodies the very essence of its motto. It’s a place where students are nurtured intellectually artistically and athletically. It’s a place where the spirit of Mother Teresa continues to inspire. It continues to shape the lives of young people in Toronto.

So as you stand here before St Mother Teresa Catholic Academy. Remember its unique history. Remember the spirit of its namesake. Remember the countless students who have walked these halls. Remember the countless stories yet to be written within these walls. The school’s legacy continues to grow and enrich the community. It’s a truly remarkable institution.
