Hidden in plain sight, St. Michael’s Cemetery whispers tales of Toronto’s past. St. Michael’s Cemetery isn’t easily found. It’s tucked away, a secret garden of stone and memory, between Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue. Established in 1855, St. Michael’s Cemetery became a sanctuary for Toronto’s Catholic community. It replaced the overcrowded St. Paul’s Cemetery. The surge of Irish Catholic immigrants, escaping famine and hardship, necessitated a larger burial ground.

St. Michael’s Cemetery became the final resting place for approximately 29,000 souls. Many were working-class Irish Canadians who helped shape the city we know today. Their stories, etched in stone, paint a vivid picture of a bygone era. Among the ordinary folks lie some notable figures. Brewer Eugene O’Keefe, whose name still graces a popular Canadian beer, rests here. So does Denis Dempsey, a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his bravery. Seven Canadian servicemen from World War I are also buried within these hallowed grounds, their sacrifice commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

A unique feature of St. Michael’s Cemetery is its octagonal mortuary vault. Designed by Joseph Sheard, who later became mayor of Toronto, this vault served a practical purpose. During the harsh Canadian winters, the ground would freeze solid, making burial impossible. The vault provided temporary shelter for the deceased until the spring thaw allowed for proper interment. Today, this architectural gem stands as a testament to Sheard’s ingenuity and foresight.

St. Michael’s Cemetery remained the sole Catholic burial ground in Toronto for nearly half a century. By 1900, it neared capacity, prompting the opening of Mount Hope Cemetery. Today, St. Michael’s Cemetery is locked away from the bustling city, accessible only through a discreet alleyway. Its gates remain closed, preserving the tranquility within. This hidden gem offers a poignant glimpse into Toronto’s rich history, a place where stories of hardship, resilience, and faith intertwine. It stands as a quiet reminder of the lives that shaped this city. The souls who found their final rest within the embrace of St. Michael’s.
