Imagine angels tumbling from the ceiling. That’s the sight awaiting us inside St. Michael’s Church. This Roman Catholic church is one of Vienna’s oldest. It stands as a testament to centuries of history and faith.

St. Michael’s Church dates back to the early 13th century. Construction occurred between 1220 and 1240. The church started in the Romanesque style. Over time, it gained Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements.

Duke Leopold VI of Babenberg initiated the construction from 1219 to 1221. St. Michael’s was one of Vienna’s original three parishes. The others were St. Stephan and the Schottenstift.

Let’s observe St. Michael’s facade. It was updated in 1792 to the Neoclassical style. Above the entrance, a statue depicts St. Michael defeating Lucifer. Lorenzo Mattielli, an Italian sculptor, created this dramatic scene. He also made the Hercules figures at the Hofburg entrance.

Inside St. Michael’s Church, the high altar captivates. Jean-Baptiste d’Avrange designed it in 1782. Karl Georg Merville sculpted the “Fall of the Angels”. This Rococo sculpture features angels and cherubs in a cloudburst. The centerpiece is Maria Candia. It is a Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary. Two archangels carry it.

The gilded pipe organ from 1714 is impressive. Johann David Sieber built it. It’s Vienna’s largest Baroque organ. A young Joseph Haydn played this very organ in 1749. In 1791, Mozart’s Requiem was performed here for the first time. This service honored Mozart after his death.

St. Michael’s Church served as the Imperial Court’s parish church. It was once called Zum heiligen Michael. Many famous people are buried here. The Italian poet Pietro Metastasio rests in its crypt.

Speaking of the crypt, the Michaelergruft is famous. It lies beneath St. Michael’s Church. Over 4,000 corpses are preserved here. The crypt’s unique climate has kept them intact. Some mummified corpses are on display.

Excavations near St. Michael’s unearthed Roman settlements. These findings reveal Vienna’s ancient roots. Architect Hans Hollein designed the presentation of the excavation site.

Consider the blend of styles within St. Michael’s Church. Its long history has shaped its diverse architecture. From Romanesque origins to Baroque additions, each era has left its mark.

St. Michael’s Church stands as a symbol of Vienna’s rich past. Its art, music, and history intertwine. It is a place where emperors worshiped and composers found inspiration. As we leave, remember the stories held within these walls.
