Contemplate the story etched in stone. It speaks of resilience, faith, and the enduring spirit of a community centered around the St. Medardus-Kapelle.

This small Catholic chapel stands on Medardstrasse in Trier-Süd. It is a testament to Trier’s rich religious history. The St. Medardus-Kapelle provides a place for contemplation.

The St. Medardus-Kapelle was built around 1860. It stands on the site of the former parish church of St. Medardus. This earlier church had a long history. Its first construction dated back to 560 AD. It was rebuilt around 1100 AD. Sadly, it was torn down in 1803 during the French occupation of Trier.

Named after Saint Medardus, a French bishop known for his benevolence, the chapel serves as a reminder of his legacy. Medardus was born in 456 in Salency, France. He was known as a benefactor to the needy and poor. Legend says that an eagle once sheltered him from a storm.

Inside the St. Medardus-Kapelle, you will find a simple yet elegant space. Eight benches from the Matthias-Basilika provide seating. A new altar was installed in 1987. Terracotta figures of saints and a large altar cross adorn the walls.

The residents of Medardstrasse hold the chapel dear. They see the St. Medardus-Kapelle as a piece of their home. Every year on June 8, St. Medard’s Day, a Mass takes place. Another Mass is held on St. Nicholas Day. The chapel’s exterior has been carefully maintained. It was last restored in 2004. A belfry, stained glass windows with biblical motifs, and a Herz-Jesu figure embellish the facade.

Until 2004, a procession took place every year for the Medardfest on June 8. It ended with a holy Mass. Today, community members gather twice a year for the Eucharist. These are held on June 8 for Medardtag and on December 6 for Nikolaustag. The chapel also hosts other events. These include a New Year’s Eve reflection with bells, Advent meditations, and an activity called “Kummerscherben-Beschriften” during Lent.

The St. Medardus-Kapelle is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith. It is a place of reflection. Also the chapel is a focal point for the community of Trier-Süd. Its doors are open to all. The St. Medardus-Kapelle is a reminder of the past and a beacon of hope for the future. It also lies on the Jakobsweg.
