Doesn’t the sight of those twin spires against the Sydney skyline just take your breath away? St Mary’s Cathedral stands as a testament to faith art and enduring architectural ambition. It’s a landmark visible from many points in the city.

Now let me tell you a story about this magnificent cathedral. St Mary’s Cathedral is not just a building. It is a symbol of Catholicism in Australia. Its story begins long before the impressive structure we see today.

Back in 1820 Father John Therry arrived in Sydney. He had a vision. A vision of a grand church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This church would rise above the city. It would be made of golden stone.

Father Therry’s dream took many years to realize. He requested land to build his church. The allocated site was east of Sydney. It overlooked a barren area. This area is now the beautiful Hyde Park.

The first St Mary’s church was simple. Governor Macquarie laid its foundation stone in 1821. It was a cruciform stone structure. It hinted at the Gothic style. But this church was destroyed by fire in 1865.

Father McEnroe planned a new cathedral. He started fundraising. Archbishop Polding sought William Wardell’s help. Wardell was a Gothic Revival architect. Polding gave Wardell creative freedom. He wanted something beautiful and grand.

Construction began in 1868. It was a huge project. Polding died before seeing it finished. In 1882 Archbishop Vaughan dedicated the church. He also provided the bells.

The building continued under Cardinal Moran. In 1913 the foundation stone for the nave was laid. The nave was completed in 1928.

For many years the facade looked incomplete. People suggested adding pinnacles. Finally in 2000 the spires were added. This was thanks to a government grant. The spires completed Wardell’s original design.

St Mary’s Cathedral played a role in World Youth Day 2008. Pope Benedict XVI visited. He made a historic apology for child sex abuse by priests.

The cathedral’s architecture is unique. It is oriented north-south instead of east-west. This is due to the city’s layout. The design is English cathedral style. It has a tower at the crossing. Twin towers stand at the west front.

The style is Geometric Decorated Gothic. Lincoln Cathedral in England inspired it. The facade is reminiscent of Notre Dame in Paris.

Inside the cathedral has a high nave and aisles. Golden sandstone gives a warm feel. The roof is red cedar. Stained glass windows depict biblical scenes.

Treasures fill St Mary’s. The Stations of the Cross are from Paris. A marble replica of Michelangelo’s Pietà is present. The crypt has mosaic floors.

The bells of St Mary’s have a unique history. The first ring arrived in 1843. They were the first change ringing bells in Australia. Today the central tower has twelve bells.

St Mary’s Cathedral is a state heritage site. It is the oldest Catholic worship place in Australia. It is associated with key figures like Father Therry and Archbishop Polding.

So as you stand here take a moment to appreciate the history art and faith embodied in St Mary’s Cathedral. It is a place of worship. It is a cultural landmark. It is a testament to the enduring power of dreams.
