Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Wellington, St Marks Wesley Uniting Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. St Marks Wesley Uniting Church traces its roots back to a simple act of devotion in 1839. Wellington’s first Christian worship service was held at Te Aro Pa by Methodist missionaries. This humble beginning marked the start of a journey that would lead to the magnificent church we see today. The original church, built on the corner of Manners and Cuba Streets, tragically fell victim to a fire in 1879. From the ashes of this loss, a new vision emerged. The congregation purchased land on Taranaki Street, paving the way for the construction of the present St Marks Wesley Uniting Church. Designed by Thomas Turnbull, the church doors swung open on March 14, 1880. The name “Wesley Church” was adopted just a week later, solidifying its place in the community. St Marks Wesley Uniting Church has witnessed the passage of time and undergone several transformations. The interior was remodeled in 1962-63, giving it the form we admire today. Tragedy struck again in 1982 when fire damaged the front of the church. Through it all, the spirit of the church remained unbroken. Even a closure for extensive seismic strengthening in 2019 couldn’t diminish its presence. St Marks Wesley Uniting Church was triumphantly reopened at Easter 2021. Today, the church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for community activity. It houses Wesley Community Action, the Wesley Counselling Service, SPELD, and Café Panama. St Marks Wesley Uniting Church continues to serve as a beacon of hope and connection in the heart of Wellington.
