Did you know that St Luke’s Anglican Church in Liverpool is the oldest still existing Anglican church in Australia? It stands as a testament to faith, architecture, and the early days of the colony. Commissioned by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, St Luke’s Anglican Church was designed by Francis Greenway. It was built between 1818 and 1820.

Macquarie had a vision for Liverpool. St Luke’s Anglican Church was a key part of that vision. It was one of the original public buildings planned for the town. The foundation stone was laid in 1818 marking the beginning of this historic church. Nathaniel Lucas, the original builder, passed away early in the project. James Smith then took over to complete the work.

Imagine attending the first service at St Luke’s Anglican Church on St Luke’s Day. It was on 18 October 1819. The Rev Robert Cartwright led the service. Even Governor Macquarie himself attended a service in December 1820. However the building wasn’t fully completed until the early 1820s.

Over the years St Luke’s Anglican Church has seen many changes. A chancel was added in 1857. A north porch was enclosed in 1860. Vestries were added in the 1890s. Greenway’s original portico was replaced in the 1870s. But in 1923 a replica of the original portico was installed. A major restoration took place between 1975 and 1978 preserving the church for future generations.

The clock in the tower is quite special. It is one of only a few Thwaites and Reed clocks in Australia. King George III gifted it to the church. The church grounds feature lemon-scented gums, stringybarks, bloodwoods, and a kurrajong tree. These trees add to the serene atmosphere surrounding St Luke’s Anglican Church.

St Luke’s Anglican Church is more than just a building. It represents Governor Macquarie’s vision for New South Wales. It is a fine example of Francis Greenway’s architectural skill. Together with St James’ Church in Sydney and St Matthew’s Anglican Church in Windsor it is considered a foundational colonial church.
