Gazing upon St. Konrad, one might sense a quiet strength emanating from its concrete form. This isn’t just another church. St. Konrad is a landmark in Stuttgart, a testament to faith and resilience in a city steeped in history. The church’s story begins in the mid-20th century. The cornerstone was laid in 1965, and just two years later, in 1967, St. Konrad was consecrated. It quickly became a spiritual hub. The church was elevated to parish status in 1969, the same year its original Vleugels organ filled the sanctuary with music for the first time. The cross-shaped tower of St. Konrad is a distinctive feature of Stuttgart’s skyline. Architect Karl Gonser designed the church with a clear vision. Its eastward orientation symbolizes a connection to the rising sun, a new day. The building itself, made of exposed concrete, features two intersecting trapezoids. Inside St. Konrad, light streams through vibrant stained-glass windows. These masterpieces, created by local artist Hilde Reiser in 1967, depict scenes of profound significance. The altar, ambo, and tabernacle, crafted by Josef Henger, add a touch of artistry to the raw concrete surroundings. St. Konrad underwent a significant renovation between 2010 and 2011. The building was modernized. The organ was also rebuilt by Michael Becker Orgelbau, incorporating elements of the original Vleugels instrument. It now boasts 27 registers. Outside, a bronze statue of St. Konrad, created by sculptor Wendelin Matt, greets visitors. The statue portrays the saint with a chalice. A spider sits on the chalice. This unique detail alludes to the legend of St. Konrad bravely drinking from a poisoned chalice during mass, demonstrating his unwavering faith. St. Konrad stands as a beacon of faith in the heart of Stuttgart. Its modern design, vibrant art, and rich history offer a unique experience for those seeking solace or simply admiring the architectural landscape of this dynamic city.
