Saint Jude also called Judas is one of Jesus’s original twelve apostles. He preached the Gospel with passion even facing difficult circumstances. Through the Holy Spirit he profoundly impacted people’s lives offering them the Word of God. The Gospel tells us St. Jude was the brother of St. James the Less. They are described in the Gospel of Matthew as the brethren of Jesus probably cousins. St. Jude is often confused with Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus.
The story of Saint Jude is interesting. He is often depicted carrying an image of Jesus. This recalls the story of King Abagar of Edessa. King Abagar asked Jesus to cure him of leprosy. He sent an artist to bring him a drawing of Jesus. Impressed with Abagar’s great faith Jesus pressed his face on a cloth. This left the image of His face on it. He gave the cloth to St. Jude who took the image to Abagar and cured him.
After Jesus’s death and resurrection St. Jude traveled through Mesopotamia Libya and Persia with St. Simon. Together they preached and built the early Church. St. Jude died a martyr’s death because of his unwavering faith. His body was brought to Rome and placed in a crypt under St. Peter’s Basilica.
The life of St. Jude inspires many. Countless people seek his intercession. They share stories of answered prayers. Many have experienced comfort and miracles through his help. People see Jude as a friend in times of trouble.
In the Catholic Church he is the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes. People believe that few Christians invoke him. They fear praying to Christ’s betrayer Judas Iscariot because of their similar names. The ignored Jude became eager to assist anyone who sought his help interceding in dire circumstances.
Saint Jude is also the patron saint of the Chicago Police Department. He is also patron of desperate situations and hospitals. One of his namesakes is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis Tennessee. It has helped children with terminal illnesses and their families since 1962.
Many countries venerate the Apostle Jude and have constructed shrines or churches dedicated to his memory. Such sites include those in Australia Brazil Sri Lanka Cuba India Iran Philippines New Zealand the United Kingdom the United States and Lebanon.
