A century of prayer echoes here. This is St Joseph’s Catholic Church. More than just a building it stands as a testament to the unwavering faith of the Rozelle community.
St Joseph’s wasn’t always this grand structure. Its story begins much earlier in 1875. Two Good Samaritan sisters arrived teaching children in the area. They built a school. Then in 1881 they erected the first church and convent. This original church sadly met a tragic end in a fire in 1911. Undeterred the community rallied together. They rebuilt the church. The current beautiful church stands proud since its construction in 1912.
The school flourished expanding throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It eventually encompassed infant primary and high school students. Several multi-story buildings accommodated the growing student body. Times changed. The school eventually amalgamated with Fr John Therry School. St Joseph’s school closed its doors in 1994.
However St Joseph’s Parish maintains strong ties to Rozelle. Its long history and active parishioners ensure its legacy. The church continues its mission to reach out to the local community. It provides support for those in need. It offers a place of worship and reflection.
