A magnificent structure stands before you. This is St John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. It’s a testament to faith resilience and community. Built in 1981 under Dr Leonidas Polymenakos’s leadership it served the Scarborough community well.

St John’s quickly became a central hub for Greek Orthodox believers in Toronto. It offered a place of worship and a strong sense of belonging. Imagine the joy the vibrant services brought to the congregation.

Tragedy struck in January 1991. A devastating fire reduced the church to ashes. The loss was immense but the spirit of the community remained unbroken. The saying “Ouden kakon ameiges kalou” or “In every bad happening there is something good” proved true.

The community rallied. They rebuilt their beloved church. Ten Russian Orthodox iconographers created stunning iconography. Services continued in a youth center gymnasium. By December 1991 St John’s was reborn. More magnificent than ever.

Today St John’s Greek Orthodox Church is one of the most well-attended in North America. It boasts two entrances an elevator and seating for 450 people. On major feast days it can accommodate up to 850. A multipurpose room hosts community events.
