Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here before us stands St John’s Cathedral a breathtaking testament to resilience and faith. This magnificent structure perched atop a hill is more than just a building. It’s a living story etched in stone and whispered on the wind.

St John’s Cathedral also known as the Cathedral of St John the Divine is the heart of the Anglican Diocese. It’s not the first cathedral on this site though. Two others preceded it. Earthquakes in 1683 and 1745 destroyed them. The current structure built in 1845 stands proudly on a fossilized reef. It’s the third incarnation of a church with a long and fascinating history.

Imagine the builders the architects Thomas Fuller of Bath and F W Rowe of Bristol. They toiled for years creating this impressive landmark. They crafted a building within a building. The inner structure of dark pitch pine acts as reinforcement against earthquakes and hurricanes. This clever design ensures the cathedral’s continued survival. The imposing white twin towers reaching 70 feet high are iconic. Originally they were described as a pagan temple with dumpy pepper pot towers. Now however they are lauded as the most impressive cathedral in the West Indies.

Notice the iron gates on the south face. Flanking them are lead statues of St John the Divine and St John the Baptist. These weren’t originally intended for Antigua. The British Navy seized them from a French ship bound for Martinique in 1756. They are a tangible piece of Antigua’s history a memento of maritime conflicts and a testament to the cathedral’s enduring spirit.

This cathedral holds more secrets. A centenarian in his memoirs recalled how it was called Big Church by planters. To the Antiguan people it was a symbol of English power. But that perception shifted over time. The black community’s involvement increased significantly around World War I their names added to the cathedral’s walls marking a change in religious and social dynamics.

Step inside. The interior is a tranquil space dominated by dark pine furnishings and marble tablets. Some of these marble tablets were salvaged from the previous churches. These fragments echo stories from the past. They silently bear witness to generations of faith hope and resilience.

St John’s Cathedral isn’t merely a place of worship. It’s a symbol of enduring faith a reflection of Antigua’s turbulent past and a beacon of hope for its future. It stands as a powerful reminder of the island’s enduring spirit a remarkable structure that has withstood the test of time.
