This isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the evolving heart of Parramatta, dating back to 1803. St John’s Anglican Church holds the title of Australia’s oldest church site in continuous use, a beacon of faith amidst the ever-changing landscape. The first structure, a humble timber creation, emerged in 1796. Governor John Hunter, a man of deep faith, laid the foundation stone of a new brick church in either 1797 or 1798. This marked a significant step, replacing makeshift structures with a permanent symbol of devotion. St John’s Anglican Church, completed in 1803, bore witness to the growth and development of Parramatta. But the story doesn’t end there. Storms, both literal and figurative, tested the church’s endurance. A fierce storm in 1841 caused extensive damage, leading to the decision to rebuild. During demolition in 1852, a hidden copper sheet emerged, inscribed in Latin. It revealed the foundation date of 1799 and the governorship of John Hunter, a secret message from the past. The church we see today, with its distinctive Victorian Romanesque style, rose from the remnants of its predecessor. The twin towers, however, stand tall as echoes of the past, modeled after St Mary’s Church in Reculver, England. These towers, built between 1817 and 1819 under Governor Macquarie, are the oldest surviving part of any Anglican church in Australia. St John’s Anglican Church continued to evolve. Transepts were added in 1883, further expanding its capacity. In 1923, thirteen memorial bells found their home in the southern tower, adding their voices to the church’s story. Even the grounds of St John’s Anglican Church hold stories. Royal Memorial Gates, erected in 1918, commemorate those who served in World War I. Inside, a tapestry depicts the original three-decker pulpit, a unique feature of early church design. A Maori font, gifted in 1969, honors Reverend Samuel Marsden’s ministry to the Maori people. St John’s Anglican Church is more than stones and mortar. It’s a narrative woven into the very fabric of Parramatta.
