Whispers of history echo from the sandstone walls of St John the Baptist Anglican Church. This isn’t just any church. It stands proudly as the oldest authenticated surviving building in Ashfield a suburb of Sydney.

Founded in 1840 on land donated by Elizabeth Underwood St John the Baptist Church played a pivotal role in the development of Ashfield. At that time the subdivision of land led to a population boom. Ashfield truly became a town.

The church wasn’t built overnight. Construction began in 1841 but ran into snags. There were problems with the initial construction and a shortage of funds. The renowned colonial architect Edmund Blacket was called in. He inspected the partially built church. His report led to the demolition and rebuilding of the walls.

This wasn’t Blacket’s only contribution. Years later he designed the stone transept and chancel transforming the church into a cruciform shape. This expansion was completed between 1874 and 1875. It was funded entirely through local donations. No government grants were received.

St John the Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith and community. Its expansive grounds house a cemetery dating back to 1845. Here lie many notable Ashfield residents. A unique Australian memorial stands proudly near the entrance. It’s a tribute to the Australian Air Force Cadets.

The church’s rich history extends beyond its architecture. Its 18 rectors include William George Hilliard who later became the Bishop of Nelson. The current rector Andrew Katay has served since early 2005.

The church’s musical history is also noteworthy. Its Hill and Son organ from 1884 is still in use. It has been meticulously maintained and restored over the years. The organ’s original pipework remains. It provides a faithful echo of the original tones. The church has a long and distinguished choral tradition. St John’s choir participated in regional festivals in the late 19th century.

St John the Baptist Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a community hub a treasure chest of local history. Its impact extends far beyond Ashfield. This church was a ‘Mother Church’ of the Western Suburbs. Many other Anglican churches in the area were established by St John’s congregation.

Leave St John the Baptist Church feeling enriched. Take away not just memories but a deeper understanding of Sydney’s history and its resilient spirit. The church continues to thrive a testament to the dedication of its community and the enduring power of faith.
