The Saint John of Shanghai Orthodox Church in Vancouver is a beacon of faith nestled in the heart of the city. It may not be as well known as other landmarks, but it has a story worth telling. This church began in 2005 as a mission of St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church in Langley. St. John’s church was a “church-plant” or daughter parish. For many years, St. Herman’s was the only English-speaking Orthodox church in the Lower Mainland. It serves as a place where people from all walks of life can come to find solace, guidance, and a sense of community. In 2008, the mission merged with St. Nina of Georgia Orthodox Mission which was another English-speaking mission in Vancouver. St. Nina’s had been served by a priest who later had to move to Ontario. So in fact, the full name of the church is Saint John of Shanghai and Saint Nina of Georgia Orthodox Church. The parish is known as a very welcoming place for those new to the Orthodox Christian faith. Many of the parishioners are actually converts to Orthodox Christianity, making St. John’s a particularly great place to encounter the riches of the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition.
