In 1834 a group of evangelical Anglicans began worshipping in Wynberg. They were defiant. They wanted their own church separate from the Church of the Province of South Africa. This was the start of St John’s Church Wynberg. St John’s refused to be fully controlled by the larger Anglican Church. They maintained their evangelical identity. They held firmly to their beliefs. This defiance shaped their history.

St John’s is more than just a church. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. It’s a place where history unfolds. The building itself is a physical record of this determination. It stands as a symbol of a community’s unwavering commitment. The congregation fought for its right to worship independently. They successfully challenged the Anglican Diocese. A special Act of Parliament was created to protect St John’s. This unique legal status continues to this day.

The story of St John’s is interwoven with the history of the Anglican Church in South Africa. In the 19th century the Anglican Church was divided. It split into the Church of the Province of South Africa and the Church of England in South Africa. St John’s Church Wynberg chose to remain separate. They wanted to maintain their evangelical traditions. They carefully negotiated their relationship with the Anglican Diocese.

Over time St John’s grew. It expanded beyond Wynberg. Five more churches joined. These formed St John’s Parish. The parish includes Christ Church Kenilworth and St Luke’s Church Diep River. St Philip’s Church Kenwyn and Emmanuel Church Wynberg are also part of the Parish. This growth reflects the enduring strength of the congregation. It demonstrates their ability to adapt and thrive.

The 1970s brought the charismatic movement. This impacted St John’s significantly. The gifts of the Holy Spirit became integral to worship. This spiritual renewal energised the congregation. St John’s became a place of strength and unity. It offered support during difficult times. It played a role in the fight against apartheid.

Later years witnessed challenges. The congregation faced reductions in size. The focus shifted to healing and rebuilding. Relationships within the parish were strengthened. A feeling of family developed. The church consciously aimed to create a welcoming environment. They wanted to attract families and young people. The efforts to rebuild have resulted in a vibrant and diverse congregation. Today St John’s Church continues to serve as a spiritual home for many. It remains a place of faith hope and resilience.
