Could a school built on a former farm hold the key to a nation’s future? Here at St Gregory’s College, the answer echoes through the halls. St Gregory’s College began in 1926. It was the dream of Thomas Donovan. He wanted a place where boys could learn practical skills. The Marist Brothers joined him in this endeavor in 1929. St Gregory’s started small, with just two students, the Cuskelly brothers. By the year’s end, it had grown to ten. The Great Depression threatened to close the school, dwindling enrollment down to just ten students again. But St Gregory’s persevered. It weathered the storm, a testament to the dedication of its founders. The college sits on what was once a vast 405-hectare property. Much of that land has since been sold to create the Gregory Hills housing subdivision. But St Gregory’s remains, perched atop Badgally Hill, the second highest peak between Sydney and the Great Dividing Range. It’s a reminder of its agricultural roots, a heritage that continues to shape its identity. Even now, St Gregory’s competes in agricultural shows. Students participate in show cattle and sheep competitions. They carry on a tradition that stretches back to the college’s founding. The sporting prowess of St Gregory’s is legendary. The college has earned a reputation as “A Nursery for Men’s Water Polo Players.” They’ve been champions a record nine times in the Arrive Alive Cup. St Gregory’s is also a force to be reckoned with in cricket and soccer. The college has produced numerous professional athletes. Many alumni have gone on to play rugby league for NRL teams. Some have even achieved state and national honors. This legacy underscores the college’s commitment to holistic education. St Gregory’s aims to develop not only strong minds, but also strong bodies. St Gregory’s is more than just a school. It is a testament to the vision of its founders. A place where students are nurtured to grow into well-rounded individuals, equipped to make a meaningful contribution to society. As you stand here, consider the seeds planted here at St Gregory’s. Seeds of knowledge, skills, and character. They have blossomed into a rich harvest of achievement, benefiting not only the students, but also the wider community.
