St. George’s-on-the-Hill Anglican Church

Who could have imagined that a simple plot of land donated in 1844 would become the site of St. George’s-on-the-Hill Anglican Church? This magnificent structure, nestled in Etobicoke, has witnessed centuries of change. It stands as a beacon of faith and community. William Gamble, the original donor, couldn’t have foreseen the transformations and additions. His generosity birthed a legacy that continues to thrive. St. George’s-on-the-Hill Anglican Church has been serving the community for nearly two hundred years. The church’s early history, from 1844 to 1894, is meticulously documented in “Sketch of a Country Parish” by Rev. H.O. Tremayne. The church’s tall white spire, a gift from early parishioners, is visible for miles. Its carillon’s melodies fill the air, a constant reminder of the church’s presence. St. George’s-on-the-Hill has always emphasized outreach. Its impact extends from local communities to far-flung corners of the globe. The congregation’s focus has historically been on India, Africa, and Canada’s North. More recently, the youth group, led by James Noronha, has extended its service to Cuba and the Yukon. The church also supports a variety of charities. These include Out of the Cold, Sleeping Children Around the World, Youth Without Shelter, and the Jean Tweed Centre. It supports the local food banks, The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, and Ukrainian relief efforts. The Prayer Shawl Group, under Natalie Quinton’s leadership, creates comforting knitted and crocheted items. St. George’s-on-the-Hill offers the internationally acclaimed “Godly Play” program for its youngest members. This program is led by The Reverend Canon Dr. Andrew Sheldon. The church also played a key role in establishing Kingsway College in 1989. It continues its support through chaplaincy services. The church was also instrumental in founding The Dorothy Ley Hospice, Etobicoke’s first residential hospice, opened in 2009. As of January 2024, Fr. Andrew Sheldon became Priest-in-Charge. The Parish Selection Committee is currently working to recommend a new incumbent to the Bishop. St. George’s-on-the-Hill Anglican Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of community, faith, and service. It has adapted and evolved through the years. It remains a vital presence in Etobicoke, continuing to serve and inspire.
