In 1848, a seed was planted. This seed, St. George’s Grammar School, was sown by Bishop Robert Gray. It took root on the grounds of St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town. St. George’s Grammar School proudly holds the title of the oldest independent school in South Africa. Initially, it was a school for white boys only. But times changed, and so did St. George’s. In 1978, the school opened its doors to students of color. A decade later, it welcomed girls, becoming the co-educational institution it is today. The original school building, designed by the renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker, stood proudly next to the cathedral. The school’s connection to the cathedral was deep. Students worshipped there and sang in the choir, a tradition that continues to this day. However, the city location lacked space, especially for sports fields. This prompted a move to the Mowbray campus. The school acquired the main house on the Bloemendal Estate in 1936. This provided much-needed playing fields and a boarding establishment. The transition was gradual. The Adderley Street campus finally closed in 1973. Everyone consolidated at the Bloemendal Estate. This ended the daily bus and train commutes for the “Bloemendal boarders.” They now had classrooms and laboratories right on the estate. St. George’s Grammar School continued to grow and evolve. The Graham Dods Audio-visual and Resource Centre and a squash court were added in 1984. The new millennium ushered in the Jenny Mallett Hall and a new Prep School foyer. This foyer also houses the school reception and the Mike Smuts Centre. More recently, in 2008, a new Science Centre and Art Gallery opened their doors. From its humble beginnings next to St. George’s Cathedral to its current location in Mowbray, St. George’s Grammar School has nurtured generations of students. It has adapted to changing times while upholding its commitment to education.
