Have you ever wondered how a simple inn transformed into a place of worship? Right here, in the heart of Vienna, stands St. Georg, a church with a fascinating history. It wasn’t always a church, though. You see, back in the early 19th century, this area was bustling with activity. The Greek community, a small but significant group, found a place for themselves here, establishing shops and businesses, even having their own tavern known as the “K\u00fcss den kleinen Pfennig” Inn. Emperor Joseph II’s Toleranzpatent granted religious freedom to non-Catholics, opening the door for the Greeks to build their own church. They pooled their resources, purchasing the inn and transforming it into a place of prayer. This was in the early 1800s, long before the grand Grecian Church designed by Theophil Hansen was built nearby. For centuries, the humble St. Georg served its purpose as a place of worship for the Greek community, offering solace and hope.
The church underwent an extensive makeover in the 20th century, adding a dome and restoring the stained glass windows after the devastation of World War II. Stepping inside St. Georg, you’ll be greeted by a simple but meaningful space. It contains icons of St. George, the Virgin Mary, and various saints. Five large paintings by the renowned Greek artist Constantinos Parthenis adorn the walls, and a majestic chandelier hangs from the expansive dome, a surprise considering the church’s modest exterior. The atmosphere here is tranquil and reflective, a testament to the resilience of the Greek Orthodox community in Vienna. Today, even though the neighborhood no longer holds the same Greek character it once did, the church stands as a reminder of the vibrant community that resided here. St. Georg, though small in size, carries a big story, a story of faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a community.
