“St Francis of Assisi,” a name whispered with reverence. This is not just another church. It’s a landmark steeped in history. Today, we stand before St Francis Catholic Church. It is a testament to faith, resilience, and community.

Let’s journey back to the early 19th century. Simon’s Town was a burgeoning naval base. The need for a dedicated Anglican church became clear. Thus, in 1814, St George’s Church was inaugurated. This marked the beginning of a long and storied history.

Imagine the bustling atmosphere. Parishioners filled the pews. Twenty-one rectors guided the congregation over two centuries. Each rector brought unique perspectives. They shaped the church’s identity through worship and service. Humorous anecdotes marked their tenures.

Tragedy struck in 1821. Severe floods caused the original building to collapse. Undeterred, the community rallied. They rebuilt the church. In 1837, a new St Francis Church rose from the ashes. Architect John Skirrow oversaw the construction.

The church was consecrated on July 30, 1837. This cemented its place in the community. In 1970, it was declared a National Monument. Today, it stands as a Provincial Heritage Site.

The Group Areas Act of 1967 brought immense challenges. St Francis Church lost over 70% of its congregation. Forced removals displaced countless families. Despite this devastation, the church persevered. It even contributed to building a new church. This was for the displaced parishioners in Ocean View.

Over the years, St Francis Church underwent several transformations. In 1867, the colonnaded porch was enclosed. A vestry was added. 1881 saw a virtual rebuilding. The sanctuary moved. A new chancel, organ chamber, choir vestry, and bell tower were added.

In 1912, the pitched roof was raised and tiled with slate. The ceiling was removed. This revealed the original wooden beams. Gothic windows were installed in 1924. In 1958, the church was renamed St Francis of Assisi.

More recently, in 2019, three windows were installed. These commemorate congregation members. They were victims of the Group Areas Act of 1967.

St Francis Catholic Church stands as a symbol of hope. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of its community. Its history is etched in its very stones. From its humble beginnings to its present-day prominence. St Francis remains a beacon of faith and resilience. Its doors are open to all who seek solace and community.
