Did you know that St Elisabeth in Cologne boasts a fascinating history? This isn’t just any church. It stands as a testament to modern church architecture. Built between 1930 and 1932 by the renowned architect Dominikus Bohm St Elisabeth is a marvel. Its design is truly unique for Cologne. The traditional three-nave hall church style is reimagined. Bohm used a clinkered steel skeleton. He topped it with a semicircular chancel end. This innovative construction made St Elisabeth stand out.

The interior of St Elisabeth is equally compelling. Light streams through high round-arched windows on the east side. But there’s more than just aesthetics. Notice the spatial separation. The central nave is at ground level. The outer naves and choir are on the first floor. This clever design separated healthy and sick visitors. Side aisles and galleries were specifically reserved for the sick. Imagine the atmosphere. The sick had their own space for worship. They could participate without mingling with those who were well.

Another notable feature is the raised choir. It houses the altar. You can access it via a grand staircase. This staircase has fifteen steps. The choir is adorned with a striking painting. Peter Hecker painted The Last Judgment in 1949-50. This vibrant piece is a powerful addition to the church’s atmosphere. It adds to its spiritual significance.

Venture into the crypt beneath St Elisabeth. You’ll discover coloured windows designed by Dominikus Bohm himself. They are a stunning example of his artistic vision. Ewald Mataré contributed to the crypt. His ear doors and Man of Sorrows sculpture were originally placed here. The sculpture is made of elm wood. It’s only been in the upper church since 2003. This shows the church’s evolving presentation.

The tapestries from 1932 add another layer of history. The Kolner Werkschulen created them. They display the craftsmanship of that time. These details enhance the entire atmosphere. St Elisabeth is more than a place of worship. It’s a testament to architectural innovation. It’s a reflection of social considerations of its time. It’s a museum of artistic expression. This remarkable church deserves to be appreciated for everything it is. St Elisabeth is a true gem of Cologne’s heritage.
