This church is dedicated to St. Demetrius. He was a soldier and martyr from the early 4th century. His popularity rivals that of St. George.
St Demetrius Greek Orthodox Church stands proudly at 30 Thorncliffe Park Drive. It serves parishioners from across the Greater Toronto Area. The church and its Polymenakion Cultural Centre were built in 1962. The cultural center houses offices for the Greek Community of Toronto. It also has classrooms and workshops. These spaces host cultural and religious activities.
Inside St Demetrius the Great Martyr Church, the iconography captivates. Mr. G. Papastamatiou completed it in 1975. Private donors from the community largely sponsored his work. The Byzantine-style icons are masterful. The iconostasis is a skilled handcraft that attracts attention.
The story of St. Demetrius is compelling. He succeeded his father as a military commander in Thessalonica. Emperor Maximian ordered him to persecute Christians. Demetrius refused. He openly preached the Gospel. Maximian imprisoned him.
Maximian had a favorite gladiator named Lyaeus. He was a large German. Lyaeus challenged any Christian to wrestle him. The arena was a platform surrounded by spears. A Christian named Nestor visited Demetrius in prison. Nestor received Demetrius’ blessing. Nestor wrestled Lyaeus. He beat him. Nestor hurled Lyaeus onto the spears.
Maximian was furious. He sent soldiers to the prison. They speared Demetrius in the chest. Nestor was killed the next day. This story is retold in the tropar of St. Demetrius’ feast day.
Devotion to St. Demetrius is strong among the Slavs. He is a patron saint of soldiers. He is also known as “Great-Martyr” and “Myrrh-gusher”. Streams of scented oil were said to come from his relics. Many miracles are attributed to him.
St Demetrius the Great Martyr Church offers services on Sundays and feast days. Orthros-Matins takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The Divine Liturgy follows from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The current Parish Priest is Fr. Konstantinos Pavlidis.
