Did you know that St Barnabas Westmead’s story began long before its current building? Home Sunday School classes started way back in 1912. Imagine the small gatherings in Westmead homes. These humble beginnings laid the foundation for the vibrant community we see today at St Barnabas Westmead.
The church’s journey continued. A property at 75 Hawkesbury Road was purchased in 1936. The existing church hall was moved to this new location. It served as a temporary home for many years. This site would eventually become the cornerstone for something even greater.
Then came the construction of the church building we see today. On December 26 1954 a significant milestone was reached. The foundation stone was laid. Archbishop Mowll himself presided over the ceremony. The inscription on the stone reads “To the Glory of God”. It serves as a powerful reminder of the faith and dedication that built this place.
The dedication of the new St Barnabas Westmead building took place on May 6 1956. It was another momentous occasion. Archbishop Mowll once again played a pivotal role. The building marked a new chapter in the life of the church.
Music has always played a central role at St Barnabas Westmead. Initially a reed organ provided accompaniment. However the new building incorporated a gallery designed for a pipe organ. The organ arrived much later in 1964. It was built by J W Walker & Sons Ltd. It’s a remarkable instrument with two manuals. The intricate process of procuring the organ involved extensive discussions and decisions. Ultimately it enhanced the church’s musical offerings.
Today St Barnabas Westmead continues to thrive. It remains a welcoming space for the community. It’s a place where people gather to celebrate their faith and support one another.
