Truth conquers. That’s the motto echoing through the halls of St Augustine’s College. This independent Roman Catholic school for boys stands proudly in Brookvale. It is located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

St Augustine’s College began its journey in 1956. Fr. Thomas Alphonsus Hunt OSA founded it. He was the Provincial Superior of the Order of Saint Augustine. The Archbishop of Sydney asked the Augustinians to start a school for boys.

Let’s step back to the beginning. Cardinal Gilroy offered the Augustinians the Parish of Manly Vale. There was one condition attached. They had to start and run a school for boys within three years. The disused tram terminus in Alfred Road Brookvale became the site.

Initially, St Augustine’s College was known as St Augustine’s College Brookvale. This changed when the college launched its International Student Program. Students came from various countries. The school became St Augustine’s College Sydney.

Originally, the head of St Augustine’s College was called “Rector”. David John Brimson OSA was the first Rector. He served from 1956 to 1964. Now, the title “Principal” is used for the lay headmasters.

For many years, Augustinian friars and priests formed a large part of the staff. In 1993, the order withdrew its teaching staff. John J. O’Brien became the first lay Principal. Since 2004, St Augustine’s College has been operated by a Board of Directors.

Sport has always been important here at St Augustine’s College. It promotes teamwork and fair play. Five Olympians have graduated from St Augustine’s College. Many students have represented the state and nation in various sports. These include rugby, soccer, basketball, swimming, and rowing.

Rugby Union was chosen as the winter sport in 1956. St Augustine’s College helped establish the Independent Sporting Association ISA.

In 2006, St Augustine’s College celebrated its 50th year. Every student received a Jubilee Medallion. A special Jubilee tie was created. Gold with green and red stripes replaced the older green tie.

In 2016, the college marked its 60th anniversary. A commemorative Mass was held at St Mary’s Cathedral. Students received a new 60 Years tie and lapel pin.

Inside St Augustine’s College, several buildings house classrooms and facilities. The Augustine Wing is the oldest building. Its foundation stone was laid in 1956. The Clancy Wing originally known as the Mendel Wing houses science classrooms. The Tolentine Wing was initially built as a library. The Brimson Centre provides indoor sports facilities. The Lecceto Arts Centre is a creative space for the arts.

The college’s values extend beyond academics and sports. St Augustine’s College offers a Red Land Club. It fosters a connection with Indigenous Australians.

Music and drama also thrive here. The college produces musicals and plays. St Augustine’s College encourages students to explore their talents.
