Picture this a vibrant green space nestled in Toronto’s heart. This is St Andrew’s Playground. A haven for children and their families. A testament to Toronto’s rich history.

St Andrew’s Playground isn’t just any park. It’s a living piece of Toronto’s past. It stands on land once home to St Andrew’s Market. Built in 1850 this market thrived as a bustling commercial center. It served Toronto’s west end for decades. A devastating fire in 1860 destroyed the original market buildings. Larger buildings replaced them in 1873. These housed a police station a community hall a library and the market itself.

However by the early 1900s the market fell into decline. The buildings were demolished in 1932. A waterworks building took their place. This Art Deco-inspired structure is now undergoing redevelopment. It will become a mixed-use space with apartments a food hall and even a YMCA. But long before this redevelopment St Andrew’s Playground had already taken root.

The southern section of the old market became a public park in the 1880s. Officially designated St Andrew’s Playground in 1909 it held a special distinction. It was Toronto’s first playground designed for supervised children’s play. The playground’s heritage is truly remarkable. A Heritage Toronto plaque installed in 2007 commemorates this special history.

Today St Andrew’s Playground continues to serve the community. Children’s laughter fills the air. Dogs frolic in the off-leash area. A water fountain provides refreshment for all. Picnic tables offer places to relax and enjoy the urban oasis. The playground is a vibrant reminder of the past a space for families to connect and enjoy the present. It is a park that offers a unique blend of history recreation and community spirit. A treasure in the heart of Toronto.
