The imposing structure before you is not what you might expect. This is St Andrew’s on The Terrace. It wasn’t always here. In fact this is the fourth iteration of St Andrew’s. The first was a humble Scotch Church. Established in 1840 it served Wellington’s earliest Presbyterian settlers. These pioneers arrived on the Bengal Merchant. They established a community years before Auckland or Dunedin.

Their faith took root. It grew. The congregation soon outgrew its original home. They moved from the Thorndon waterfront. Then to Lambton Quay before settling on this very spot. This building isn’t the first on this site either. A previous church stood here. That one tragically burned down in 1920.

The current building was completed in 1923. The architect Frederick De Jersey Clere designed this beautiful church. He incorporated elements recalling the previous wooden structure. The facade is classical Renaissance. The interior a basilica with an apsidal chancel. Note the fine coved and coffered ceiling. This is a rare example of neo-baroque church architecture. In fact it’s the only one left in Wellington.

St Andrew’s has always been more than just a place of worship. It has been a center for music and social justice. It is a place for community. It’s a place of renewal. In the 1970s the church underwent a significant revitalization. It expanded its outreach. The congregation grew. The church became a prominent inner-city location. It even united with another Presbyterian Church Crossways in 2002. This strengthened the community even more.

Restoration and strengthening work on the church and its hall recently took place. This was topped off with the opening of the St Andrew’s Centre in 2014. Today it’s a popular venue. It is used by businesses government and community groups.

As you stand before St Andrew’s today you see more than a building. You see the legacy of faith resilience and community. A story woven into the very fabric of Wellington itself. You see a place of worship and gathering. A place that has endured fires moves and the test of time. A place that remains at the heart of the city.
