The imposing yellow sandstone structure before you is St Amandus. Built between 1865 and 1867 it stands as a testament to faith and resilience. This neo-Gothic church replaced an older structure near the Kyll River. Its architect was Pleimes of Trier a name whispered with respect among local historians.

St Amandus isn’t just a building. It’s a living history. Notice the subtly arched entrance. It bears the date 1866 a quiet boast of creation. The tower rises proudly. Its cross-shaped gable and eight-sided slate helmet dominate the Kordel townscape. Those flanking porches? Additions from the 1930s elegant enhancements to the original design.

Inside St Amandus you’ll find a simple elegance. The 1960s purification movement swept away much of the original decor. Yet some treasures remain. The gallery supported by graceful Gufeisensäulen still stands. In the tower hall rests a neo-Gothic stone baptismal font. Nearby in the choir sits an older cup-shaped font a relic of a bygone era. Even the builder’s legacy persists. A neo-Gothic gravestone for Pastor Badern who died in 1877 is built into a porch wall.

The church’s history echoes in its bells. The current peal is the third for St Amandus. The original bells bronze masterpieces from the 16th and 18th centuries were melted down for war efforts during World War I. Only the smallest survived. Three replacements were cast in 1921 only to suffer the same fate in World War II. The current bells installed in 1949 bear the names of Saints Martin Amandus and Michael. The largest is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Even the stained-glass windows tell a story. Designed by Father Rudolf Fritz they depict creation scenes inspired by St Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun. The sun a symbol of God’s life-giving power dominates. Trees flowers and leaves symbolize renewal life’s cyclical nature. Each window has a story a meditation on faith.

A recent addition a statue of St Amandus himself stands within St Amandus. Carved in 2011 by the Albl woodcarving workshop in Oberammergau it’s a beautiful blend of artistry and devotion. This statue a gift from the Kordel Catholic Women’s Association stands as a powerful symbol of faith. It’s a reminder that this church is much more than stones and mortar. It is a place of unwavering spirit. A place where stories resonate through time. A place of enduring faith like the spirit of St Amandus himself.
