Envision yourself as a student here in 1936. St Aloysius College Cronulla began its journey then. It was initially known as De La Salle College. The De La Salle Brothers purchased a bushland property called Kilkivan Grange. The existing house became home to boarding students.
Brother Donatus Slattery was the first principal. He was a much-loved man. Sadly he passed away in 1962. From 1936 to 1967, the college educated students from primary to leaving certificate levels. Then in 1967, it changed. It became a senior college for Years 11 and 12 only. This was in cooperation with De La Salle College in Caringbah.
St Aloysius College Cronulla made history in 1975. It welcomed girls for the first time. They were graduates from Our Lady of Mercy College. In 1990, the Catholic Education Office took over administration.
Brother Stan Carmody encouraged the rugby league team. Several players went on to join the National Rugby League. In 1994, the college appointed its first lay principal.
Fast forward to 2024. St Aloysius College Cronulla welcomed Year 7 students. It is becoming a fully co-educational college from Years 7 to 12 in 2027. Its new name reflects its connection with St Aloysius parish in Cronulla.
Many principals have guided the college. Brother Donatus Slattery led the way. Others include Brother Vincent Latham and Brother George Lyons. More recent principals include Mrs Julia O’Connor and Mr John Maguire. Mr Stephen Mahoney is the current principal.
St Aloysius College Cronulla has produced notable alumni. Politicians like John Della Bosca and Michael Forshaw attended. Athletes like Andrew Ettingshausen walked these halls. Musicians John and Genni Kane of the Flying Emus also studied here.
The college’s mission is clear. It is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. It also follows the traditions of St John Baptist De La Salle and St Aloysius Gonzaga.
