“Founded to practice and promote Jainism.” This statement encapsulates the essence of Sri Jain Mandir Toronto. Established on January 1st, 2001 by Jain families in the Greater Toronto Area. Sri Jain Mandir Toronto is often called SJM by its members.
Each year, January 1st is celebrated as the founding day. Many members participate in the day’s activities. But what exactly is Jainism? It is one of the oldest religions. Jainism preaches non-violence.
Now let’s step inside Sri Jain Mandir. What do we see? The temple houses beautiful idols of Tirthankars. Mahaveer Swami is the moolnayak. This 2.6-foot white marble idol sits in padmasan posture. Adinath Swami is another idol. It is 2 feet high and made of white marble. Parshwanath Swami is 2 feet high. This idol features black marble. Neminath Swami is smaller at 9 inches high in black marble.
Interestingly, there were three metal idols. Sadly these were stolen in a burglary in 2008. On July 1st, 2003, the Padmavati Devi idol was installed. Bhattarakji guided this installation. Sri Jain Mandir is easily accessible to many practicing families. Members practice core Jain principles with dedication. They try to pass these principles to the next generation.
Sri Jain Mandir Toronto serves its original purpose. It continues to promote Jainism in the GTA. The temple welcomes new Jain families to the community. Over the years, member participation has grown. SJM has a closely knit community of over 250 Jain families. They all practice Jain principles in the Greater Toronto Area. The community is ever growing.
Walk-in hours are on Sundays from 11 am to 2 pm. Temple visits are possible by appointment on other days. Sundays include Abhishek, pujan, Swadhyay/Samayik, aarti and lunch. You can become a sponsor or volunteer for programs. Donations to SJM are welcome using several options. You can donate in person with cash or cheque. You can mail a cheque to the temple. Since its founding, SJM has been blessed with high energy volunteers. The organization is run wholly by volunteers. Your help and expertise are appreciated.
