The Sri Ayyappa Society of Tampa started in 2000. Several Ayyappa devotees in the Tampa Bay area came together. Their main goal was to build an Ayyappa shrine. The shrine would feature the holy 18 steps. They also wanted to establish proper Ayyappa Pooja services. The society is registered in Florida.
This temple is the first of its kind in North America. It is the first temple with Lord Ayyappa as the main presiding deity. It also has the holy 18 steps. Every year, during Mandala Season, devotees come from all over the USA. This is the most important season for Ayyappa Swami.
The Sri Ayyappa Society of Tampa, or SASTA, promotes Dharma Sasta and Sanatan Dharma. They conduct Lord Ayyappa poojas. They also host various cultural and educational events. Other deities in the temple include Lord Ganesha and Lord Muruga. You will also find Goddess Devi, Lord Shiva, and Lord Guruvayuappan.
One of the primary goals is engaging the next generation. The temple offers weekly classes for kids. These include Bagavat Gita, Yoga, and Slokas & Bhajans. Classical Music & Dance, Indian Language learning, Meditation and Sanskrit classes are also available. During this Mandal season, a platform was created. It allows local talent to perform in Saturday Music concerts.
The Sri Ayyappa Society of Tampa emphasizes key principles. S stands for Sat Sang Guidance from wise persons. A is for Aradhana Worship of the Divine. S represents Samastha Bhavana Practice of Sense of equality. T means Tat Tvam Asi Divine are you. A signifies Atma Siddhi Spiritual realization.
Many call this temple Sabarimala of USA. It’s the first Ayyappa Temple in the USA. It features 18 Holy steps and Lord Ayyappa as the main deity. The Mandala season includes Maladharnam and Irumudi Kettunira. Patha yatra, climbing the Holy 18 steps, and Nei Abhisekham are also part of the celebrations. Padi poojas, Mandala Utsavam and Makara Jyothi complete the festivities.
