In 1969, a vision began to materialize in a field at the intersection of Highway 10 and Burnhamthorpe Road. This vision, S. Bruce McLaughlin’s vision, was Square One. Initially, some believed the city center would form elsewhere. But McLaughlin, a shrewd businessman, saw the potential of his land holdings near Hurontario Street. He offered land for the new City Hall, free of charge, effectively anchoring the future downtown Mississauga at Square One. This cemented Square One’s position as the heart of Mississauga. The mall opened in 1973, a year before Mississauga officially became a city. This wasn’t just about building a shopping center. McLaughlin’s foresight extended to the very infrastructure of the area. Services and utilities were placed underground, a move uncommon for the time. This, he explained, would allow for future high-rises and the high-density development we see today. Square One quickly became more than just a mall. It evolved into a symbol of the city, a bustling hub attracting shoppers and businesses alike. City Hall rose next door, and corporations followed, filling the gleaming office towers along City Centre Drive. Square One’s initial 160 stores have multiplied over the years. It’s now the largest mall in Ontario, boasting 2.2 million square feet and over 360 retailers. Square One isn’t just about shopping anymore. It has transformed into a “lifestyle destination.” This vibrant hub offers dining, entertainment, and services, providing a complete experience for the whole family. From humble beginnings in an empty field, Square One has become a landmark, a tourist destination, and a testament to the vision of S. Bruce McLaughlin.
