Founded in 1939 Springfield Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Its story began not in a grand edifice but in the humble home of Sister Josie Cheeter at 777 M Street Northwest. There thirty-seven founding members mostly from Springfield Baptist Church in Edgefield South Carolina gathered for their first devotional service. Deacon Jefferson D Yeldell Sister Annie Mae Yeldell and others were among those present. Reverend John Sligh served as the temporary moderator. Deacon J R Simmons was the temporary secretary.

From its modest beginnings at 777 M Street the church moved to 1337 Seventh Street Northwest. Reverend Westley Shorter initially served as acting pastor. Then Reverend Eddie J Gallman was chosen as the first official pastor. Under his leadership Springfield Baptist Church purchased a building at 1429 Sixth Street Northwest. This building now houses the Kingdom Kids Child Development Center.

The church’s growth continued through the years. It saw the dedication of its current edifice on January 25 1976 under the leadership of Reverend Dr L B Jones Sr. Eight pastors in total have served Springfield Baptist Church each contributing to its spiritual journey. The church faced challenges but persevered showing remarkable faith and strength.

Today Springfield Baptist Church continues to thrive. It serves as a beacon of hope in the community. Its mission is to be a Christ-centered church that evangelizes equips and empowers believers.
