Huge cargo planes are preparing for takeoff. The apron bustles with activity. You see the cargo areas and even a glimpse of the military section. It’s a captivating ballet of aviation power.
The Spotting Point isn’t just about seeing planes. It’s about experiencing the history. This airport began as a military training area in 1913. The first plane took off for an artillery reconnaissance flight. Then it became an airfield for the Luftwaffe in 1939. After World War II British troops expanded it. A long runway was built. Then in 1951 it opened to civilian traffic. Since then it has grown to become the sixth largest airport in Germany. The third busiest for cargo.
This viewpoint provides you with a clear view. Even without the interference of tinted windows. You can see the planes clearly. A 200mm lens might be enough for a taxiing airbus. But you’ll need a longer lens. Perhaps 250-300mm for a landing one.
The Spotting Point is open daily from 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM. It’s free. But remember. It closes in bad weather. Thunderstorms or icy conditions will close it. For safety reasons.
