Did Fajtl ever imagine his Spitfire would become a symbol of resistance? Right here in Prague, the Spitfire – František Fajtl Installation commemorates a true Czech hero. František Fajtl’s life reads like an adventure novel. Born in 1912, he joined the Czechoslovak Air Force, flying Aero biplanes. When Germany occupied his homeland, Fajtl escaped to France. He flew for the French Air Force until France fell. Then, he made his way to Great Britain. He joined the RAF and fought bravely in the Battle of Britain, flying Hurricanes. Later, he transitioned to Spitfires with No. 313 Squadron. This squadron, composed of Czechoslovakian pilots, became Fajtl’s home for a significant part of the war.

The Spitfire – František Fajtl Installation isn’t just metal and paint. It represents Fajtl’s incredible escape from occupied France in 1942. Shot down near Hazebrouck, he evaded capture and traversed enemy territory. He crossed the Pyrenees into Spain. Unfortunately, he was imprisoned there, but British diplomacy secured his release. He returned to his squadron, a testament to his resilience. Fajtl’s leadership earned him command of No. 122 Squadron. Later, he led a group of Czechoslovak pilots in the Soviet Union, flying Lavochkin La-5 FN fighters. These pilots supported the Slovak National Uprising in 1944, a crucial moment in Czechoslovakian history.

The Spitfire – František Fajtl Installation embodies Fajtl’s unwavering spirit. After the war, he returned to Prague a hero. However, the communist regime saw him as a threat. He was dismissed from the Air Force, imprisoned, and forced into menial labor. Despite this hardship, Fajtl’s spirit remained unbroken. He was partially rehabilitated in 1968 and fully restored to his rank after the Velvet Revolution. The Spitfire – František Fajtl Installation stands as a symbol of defiance, courage, and the enduring fight for freedom. It honors a man who dedicated his life to his country, facing down enemies both foreign and domestic. Remember, as you look at this Spitfire, the courage of František Fajtl. He was a true hero, whose story continues to inspire. The inscription reads “Svoboda není samozřejmost” which translates to “Freedom is not to be taken for granted.” These words perfectly capture the essence of Fajtl’s legacy and serve as a reminder to us all.
