Across the Vistula River, the Spichlerz Michla stands as a testament to Warsaw’s industrial past. This imposing granary, also known as Michler’s Mill, dominates the landscape. Spichlerz Michla was part of a larger complex. This complex included a steam mill and a gatehouse. Built around 1910 by the “Warsaw Steam Mill” company, owned by Ludwik Michl, Spichlerz Michla served a vital role. It stored the grain processed by the nearby steam mill. This mill, built in 1899, provided the steam power for the entire complex. The red brick facade of Spichlerz Michla and its surrounding buildings is striking. The intricate brick decorations add a touch of elegance to these industrial structures. Today, the Spichlerz Michla complex is recognized for its historical significance. It is listed in the register of historic monuments, thanks to the efforts of local residents. They intervened to protect the complex from demolition during the planning of the Świętokrzyska Route. While the route may eventually encroach on part of the complex’s land, Spichlerz Michla itself remains a proud landmark on the Warsaw skyline. It whispers stories of a bygone era, when flour dust filled the air and the rhythmic hum of machinery echoed across the Praga district.
