The Sphinx Memorial in Sydney’s Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is a remarkable creation. Private William T Shirley a stonemason and World War I veteran painstakingly carved it. He was severely gassed during the war. His ill health continued after the war. He created this memorial while a patient at Lady Davidson Convalescent Hospital. Shirley worked for about a year and a half. He meticulously crafted this one eighth scale replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza. He dedicated it to his fallen comrades.
Shirley’s dedication is truly awe-inspiring. He poured his heart and soul into this project. He worked despite suffering from the effects of gas poisoning. He completed this labour of love. He died on August 27 1929. The memorial stands as a powerful symbol of his sacrifice and devotion.
