Carved from solid rock this is the Sphinx Memorial. It stands as a poignant tribute to fallen soldiers of the AIF. This incredible monument is more than just stone. It is a testament to resilience and remembrance.

The Sphinx Memorial in Sydney’s Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is a remarkable creation. Private William T Shirley a stonemason and World War I veteran painstakingly carved it. He was severely gassed during the war. His ill health continued after the war. He created this memorial while a patient at Lady Davidson Convalescent Hospital. Shirley worked for about a year and a half. He meticulously crafted this one eighth scale replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza. He dedicated it to his fallen comrades.

Shirley’s dedication is truly awe-inspiring. He poured his heart and soul into this project. He worked despite suffering from the effects of gas poisoning. He completed this labour of love. He died on August 27 1929. The memorial stands as a powerful symbol of his sacrifice and devotion.

The Sphinx Memorial was rededicated in 1995. This event recognised the selflessness of AIF members. Visitors can find several plaques. One plaque reads “To my glorious comrades of the AIF”. Another commemorates the restoration of the memorial. These plaques enhance the memorial’s emotional impact. They amplify its significance. They underscore the enduring memory of those who served and sacrificed.

The Sphinx itself is a captivating sight. Its intricate details and imposing presence draw visitors in. Its size is impressive considering the circumstances of its creation. Imagine the care and precision required. Imagine the physical and emotional toll. This quiet testament stands against the backdrop of nature’s grandeur. It beckons contemplation and reflection. It invites visitors to reflect on the cost of war.

The Sphinx Memorial is more than just a statue. It’s a story of human spirit. It’s a story of perseverance. It’s a story of enduring remembrance. It’s a story of a man’s love for his comrades. It is a memorial that connects the past with the present. It leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. Take a moment to appreciate this extraordinary piece of history.
