“Since 1899” sounds like a great start to a story. The story of Spencerville Free Methodist Church begins long before many of us were even born. This church has been proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ to all people. Imagine the impact this church has had on the world.
Spencerville Free Methodist Church started in the summer of 1899. The first Free Methodist tent meeting was held on Colesville Road. It was at Clovely Maryland. Rev A.G. Miller a Free Methodist missionary-evangelist was the speaker. In the fall of that year Rev A.G. Miller organized worship with sixteen charter members. This became Spencerville Free Methodist Church. Services were held in the Spencerville Hall until the fall of 1905.
In the summer of 1905 work began on the original church. The ground next to the Spencerville Hall was used. Mr. Albert Sargent donated the ground. In 1949 the church observed a Golden Anniversary celebration. Rev. L.H. Kelley was the pastor at that time.
During the years of 1952 to 1954 the building was relocated. It was moved back from the street. The building was also extensively remodeled. Rev. W.N Snider and Rev. C.H. Barnett were pastors during this period. The Cornerstone was laid in October 1954. You can easily see it at the front right side of the church.
As the church continued to grow plans were made to enlarge the building. Groundbreaking took place on May 19 1963. Construction began in August of that year. The present church was dedicated on October 11 1964. Rev. Robert J. Magee Sr. was the pastor. The parsonage was erected in April 1965.
God was not done with this place. Even during COVID the church saw opening doors for a new life to spring forward. After a year in transition September 2021 marked a new dawn. Rev. Ebenezer and Lauren Murengezi and their 5 children were sent here. They relaunched Crossway Christian Church. They had a fresh vision to build a community marked with love. This community was also devoted to the teachings of the apostles. Prayer and fellowship were important.
The church has seen God deepening the depth of faith. They have already started three house churches. More are to come. Spencerville Free Methodist Church changed its name to Crossway Christian Church. It continues to serve the community. It encourages others through a life-changing Christian journey. The church seeks to serve God. It works for justice and peace. It respects and learns from all great faith traditions. It desires to be known by the love they have for one another. Spencerville Free Methodist Church has a rich history and a bright future.
