“A lovely wander” awaits us today at Speedy’s Stream. This stream is not well known. But it offers a beautiful experience on a sunny day.

Speedy’s Stream is located within Speedy’s Reserve. It is a hidden gem near Kelson. It features beautiful bush. Deep gullies surround it. The sound of rushing water fills the air. Belmont Stream also contributes to this symphony.

This area holds historical significance. Part way along the stream lies the Pareraho Pa Site. It is believed to be an old defensive site. This pa dates back to the Fight at Boulcott’s Farm.

Peter Speedy, born in Wellington in 1842, provided insights. The Belmont Creek, flowing through his property, served as a Maori war track. It connected Heretaunga and Porirua districts. The trail ascended the rocky creek bed. It led to a steep, narrow spur.

Long ago, natives cleared a part of this ridge. Speedy found remains of huts roofed with totara bark. He also discovered earth oven stones, a rusted bayonet and a musket barrel. These relics dated back to 1846. The lofty ridge offered an excellent defensive position. It served as a temporary pa during war times. The ground falls sharply on either side, creating canyon-like valleys. It is believed that the war party descended on Boulcott’s Farm via this route in 1846. The Militia and friendly natives also used this track to march to Paua-taha-nui.

As we walk along Speedy’s Stream, notice the regenerated forest. Stunning rewa rewa trees and nikau palms thrive in the gorge. Keep an eye out for less welcome plants. Barberry and asparagus fern are strangling the bush in places. Speedy’s Reserve is part of Belmont Regional Park. The Greater Wellington Regional Council oversees it. They focus mainly on predator control. Future development plans include weed eradication.

To reach Speedy’s Reserve, head to the bottom of Major Drive in Kelson. Limited parking is available. Alternatively, catch the Kelson bus 150. Follow the orange blazes into the bush. You will soon reach Belmont Stream. Prepare for two stream crossings. After the second crossing, the path ascends on your right.

The path becomes narrow with steep drops into the gorge. Good walking boots are essential. After approximately 20 minutes, you will reach a T-junction. Turn right to reach the pa site.

Imagine warriors of the past traversing this very stream. Envision them seeking refuge in the forest. Feel the weight of history as you explore this hidden gem. Today, Speedy’s Stream offers tranquility. It is a place to connect with nature and remember the past. This blend of natural beauty and historical significance creates a unique experience. It is a testament to the stories etched into this land.
