Right before you, stands the Soviet pilots monument, a solemn tribute to the Soviet airmen who perished in the skies above Laos during the Vietnam War. You might be surprised to find this monument here, a silent testament to the far-reaching tendrils of the Cold War, interwoven with the history of Laos. During the Vietnam War, Laos found itself caught in the crossfire. Despite its neutrality, Laos became a battleground. The Soviet Union, supporting the communist Pathet Lao, provided covert military aid. Among this aid were skilled Soviet pilots, who braved enemy fire to deliver crucial supplies and support to Laotian forces. They flew thousands of missions, transporting tons of cargo across treacherous skies in support of the Pathet Lao. The monument stands in honor of the more than 30 Soviet pilots and specialists who never returned from those perilous missions.
