The suburb became officially separate from Turramurra on August 5, 1994. Before that, it was simply considered part of Turramurra. The name Turramurra itself has Aboriginal origins. It thought to mean “big hill,” “high place,” or “small watercourse”.
In earlier times, the area was known as Eastern Road. This name lasted until the railway station was built in 1897 when the name Turramurra was adopted.
The suburb’s history includes community activism. During the early 1990s, residents formed the Coalition Against Lane Cove Valley Freeways. Their goal was to prevent the construction of a freeway extension. The community’s efforts successfully protected the bushland. This bushland is now part of the Lane Cove River National Park.
