What if I told you that the history of South Tampa Fellowship is one of mergers, growth, and a commitment to safety? The story of this church is more than just Sunday services. It is about a community evolving and adapting to serve its members.

South Tampa Fellowship has roots going back to the 1960s. It began as Davis Islands Community Church. The congregation first met in people’s homes. In 1962, they built a worship center. As the church grew, they added offices and an education building.

However, by the early 1990s, Davis Islands Community Church faced challenges. Attendance had dwindled to fewer than 50 people. Recognizing the need for change, the church sought a merger with Idlewild Baptist Church. In November 1995, they held their first service as Idlewild Baptist Church Davis Islands. It was a satellite campus.

On October 1, 1999, the church became an autonomous congregation. They adopted the name Davis Islands Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Pastor Jeff Parish, the church experienced steady growth. They soon realized they needed more space.

In 2003, another twist occurred. Ballast Point Baptist Church was facing similar struggles. They approached Davis Islands Baptist Church for a merger. This led to a building program to accommodate the growing congregation.

In 2005, the leadership made a significant decision. They wanted a name that would identify them as a church regardless of location. South Tampa Fellowship was chosen as the umbrella name. The Davis Islands and Ballast Point campuses were distinguished with tags.

The church continued to expand. In November 2007, South Tampa Fellowship moved to a new Ballast Point Campus. This was after two capital campaigns and major renovations. The Davis Islands Campus reopened for services in 2009. By 2012, they added an additional service at 9:30 a.m.

South Tampa Fellowship also has an international reach. In 2014, they formed a strategic partnership with Pangrango Baptist Church in Jakarta, Indonesia. In December, Pangrango became South Tampa Fellowship’s first international campus.

In recent years, South Tampa Fellowship has prioritized safety. Executive Pastor Chris Dotson sees child protection as a matter of gospel integrity. The church partnered with the Evangelical Council for Abuse Prevention. This organization provides accreditation and resources for child protection. South Tampa Fellowship became a charter member of ECAP.

The church underwent a rigorous process to obtain accreditation. This included evaluating policies and conducting training. They also implemented background checks for staff and volunteers. According to Dotson, the accreditation process was incredibly worth it. It gave them confidence that they were doing things above board.

Since gaining accreditation, South Tampa Fellowship has seen numerous benefits. Parents feel more comfortable and trust the church. This has led to increased participation in ministries. The church views safety as a means of fueling growth. Their goal is to ensure that Christ and the gospel remain central.

So, as you stand here, remember that South Tampa Fellowship is more than just a building. It is a community with a rich history. It is committed to growth, safety, and spreading the gospel.
